Harry Tilley

Born in 1874, he enlisted as a Regular soldier in 1892 and joined the 1st Battalion DLI in Ireland. He served in the Boer War, as a Colour Sergeant, and was Mentioned in Despatches three times. In 1914, after twenty-two years in the ranks, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant with 1 DLI in India.
In 1915, he was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps and served until his retirement in 1920. He was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1919.
During the Second World War, he served in the Home Guard.
Harry Tilley died in 1947, aged 73.
